Opening of the Golden Gate

The opening of the San Francisco Bay into the Pacific Ocean is a suspension bridge known as the Golden Gate Bridge. It was completed in 1937 and is presently the longest suspension main span in the U.S. It has become a symbol of San Francisco and California which is recognized internationally. It is also the most photographed bridge in the world.

  1. How long is the golden gate bridge? I was recently in San Diego and on a tour the guide was talking about the bridge that connects San Diego with Coronado Island It was like 2.2miles long and they said it was actually longer then the Golden Gate bridge, now I wonder if that is in fact correct or not.

  2. According to the wiki, which for major things like a landmark, is fairly accurate, it states it's approx 1.71 miles long. What's ironic though, is I just finished watching the final X-Men movie where the main bad guy used his power to move part of the bridge to connect to Alcatraz. I wonder if they ever will find the need to expand it's already 6 lanes of traffic.

  3. In your construction classes do you learn of different structural integrities? I was just wondering, with California Earthquakes and all, how sound it really is. Earthquakes are far too popular this year.

  4. There are many specialization in engineering. Construction Management do not cover structural integrities. But as far as I know, today's modern times, huge buildings and bridges including those in California are already designed by Structural Engineers to withstands massive earthquakes.
